FELDENKRAIS METHOD
Moshe Feldenkrias, DSC, a distinguished scientist and engineer, developed the technique following a knee injury, which untreated, threatened him with severe disability in middle age. His technique contributed to him not only maintaining mobility, but also to healing his knee. By heightening our awareness of our movement, breathing and posture, we might learn to move more freely, with greater ease, flexibility and grace. The Method may permanently improve our posture, balance and co-ordination, awakening our innate capacity for life long vitality and continuing self development. Each session revolves around a question: ''How do your habits of movement help you, but at the same time stand in the way of you moving more freely?'' In a typical session the client discusses this, then lies fully-clothed on a specially designed couch. The practitioner's hands gently support the client, suggesting, encouraging and guiding towards new ways of moving and organising. Each session is unique and designed by the practitioner to address particular habits of moving and holding oneself. The increasing self awareness may enable the client to let go of these habits, to find and choose new patterns of movement. The lesson will often lead to suggestions by the practitioner for ways of working by oneself, in order to help the new choices become a lasting part of the client's life.
